Symposium on International News Communication since the Founding of P.R. China Held at HUBU

The 2019 annual meeting of the Foreign Journalism and Communication study committee of the Chinese Association for History of Journalism and Communication(CAGC) was held at Hubei University from Sept. 27 to Sept. 28. with the theme of “Retrospect and Prospect: International News Communication since the Founding of P.R. China”. Nearly 100 scholars and researchers from more than 30 universities, research institutions and news agencies at home and abroad, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, etc. attended the symposium.

During the two-day forum, researchers had discussions on global cultural communication, Chinese and foreign news history, foreign news communication theory and international communication in the context of telling Chinese stories.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Liao Shengwu, dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, Hubei University. He hoped that all the experts could share their ideas and exchange academic achievements during the forum.


Qian Jianguo, Vice President of Hubei University said that on the occasion of celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of People’s Republic of China and the 88th anniversary of the founding of Hubei University, the forum brings opportunities to the development of the School of Journalism and Communication. He hoped to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with scholars and medias in this filed.


Sun Youzhong, vice President of Beijing Foreign Studies University and president of CAGC, had a talk on the course of Journalism history study in foreign countries in the past 70 years. He believed that the research is becoming increasingly mature and entering the stage of explanatory research, in which the Foreign Journalism and Communication study committee has great potential in coming up with new research breakthrough. He hoped that all scholars make greater contributions to improving China's international communication level, telling Chinese stories and displaying China's international image.


Professor Chen kaihe from Peking University, professor Shan Bo from Wuhan University, professor Jiang Fei from Beijing Foreign Studies University, professor Zhang kun from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, professor Zhang Juxi from Zhengzhou University and associate professor Zhang Fan from Hubei University successively gave keynote speeches, sharing research ideas on foreign journalists in China, reporting on China for foreign audiences, the history of journalism communication education, international journalism communication and foreign media's reports on Hong Kong.


After the opening ceremony, four workshops namely "Global Cultural Communication and Theoretical Reflection", "Doctors and Young Scholars Workshop", "Post-graduate Students Workshop", "Workshop of School of Journalism and Communication of Universities Co-constructed by the Department of Education" , were held simultaneously.


Zhang Fan, associate professor of Hubei University, won the "Top Ten Academic Papers Award" with Hidden Prejudice: an Analysis of Reported Discourse in CNN’s Hong Kong Occupy Central News Report”.


The symposium is hosted by the Foreign Journalism and Communication study committee of CAGC, co-organized by the School of International Journalism and Communication of Beijing Foreign Studies University and the Media Research Center of Hubei University, and organized by the School of Journalism and Communication, Hubei University. CAGC is the only national-level academic organization of Journalism and Communication in China registered at the Ministry of Civil Affairs,  and the Foreign Journalism and Communication study committee is one of the earliest established study committees of CAGC.
