Hubei University held a symposium to mark the completion of the restoration of the Old Gate on November 26. "The Old Gate coalesces the memories and emotions of all faculty, students, and alumni of Hubei university, for several decades. And its restoration showcases the enduring affection alumni have for their alma mater and highlights the profound cultural heritage of Hubei University." Hou Yong, Deputy Secretary of CPC Hubei University Committee said on the symposium.

The Old Gate restored the one that was remodeled when the university was named Wuhan Normal College (the predecessor of Hubei University) in the 1960s. Located on the site of the original Northwest gate, the restored gate is designed in the style of a traditional "pai-fang" arched architecture, consisting of three gateways and four pillars. It is 14.6 meters long and 7.7 meters tall. The exterior of the gate is finished by using cement techniques, and the plaque inscribed with "Hubei University" is made of white marble, with lettering that replicates the original design. The overall color scheme of the gate is natural, solemn, and simple.

Founded in 1931 as the Wuhan Normal College at Baoji An in Wuchang District (the current location of Wuchang campus), Hubei University has undergone six relocations and eight name-changes over the coming 90 years. It officially changed its name from Wuhan Normal College to Hubei University in 1984. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Hubei University's transformative development, as well as the 50th anniversary of the establishment of its Political Education Department. The idea to restore the Old Gate was proposed by Guo Jinsong, a former counsellor of Political Education Department, as well as alumni who graduated in 1995, including Xiong Youhua and Li Li. Represented by Chen Guomin, the 1991 alumni of Political Education Department raised over 700,000 yuan to fund the restoration.

During the symposium, Hou Yong presented a donation plaque to Chen Guomin and other alumni. "By restoring the Old Gate, we all hope to recollect our good old days and express our heartfelt thanks to our alma mater", said Chen.
