Western Culture of HUBU Won the Third Prize for the Excellent Examples of Teaching in UMOOCs

On December 20, supported by Beijing Foreign Studies University, organized by Beijing Unipus Online Digital Technology Co., the 4th Annual Conference of the UMOOCs League was held in Beijing. Focusing on "Writing a new chapter", the conference attracted experts and scholars from more than 100 universities across China to share new achievements and discuss new applications of MOOC development. In the second UMOOCs' Outstanding Case Study of Teaching and Learning, the course "Western Culture" by Associate Professor Lu Xiaoli from the School of Foreign Languages was awarded the third prize.

“Western Culture” is a course available on the UMOOCs. The course is based on fifteen cultural themes of Western countries, covering currency, sports, media, education, literature, festivals, rituals, marriage, mythology, cuisine, architecture, opera, painting, elections and fashion. It aims to help learners understand western culture. The course effectively enhances students' motivation of learning through online and offline teaching, in-depth integration of modern information technology, and post-class reflection and online discussion.

The Western Culture course team consists of young teachers, most of whom have studied and visited western English-speaking countries, and have first-hand experience and academic accumulation in western cultural exchange. Under the leadership of Associate Professor Lu Xiaoli, the team members worked together to design and prepare the text materials and videos for the competition, and finally won the first prize in the online competition among the participating cases from universities and entered the final round.

 

It is reported that guided by the Guiding Committee of Teaching Informatization and Teaching Method Innovation of Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education and organized by the UMOOCs League, the "UMOOCs Excellent Case Study" is a national excellent case study of teaching and learning. It aims to set a model for the development of foreign language teaching in higher education in the post-epidemic era.
