Recently, the literature review paperAdvanced Understanding of the Electron-Transfer Pathway of Cytochrome P450swas published in ChemBioChem by the research team of Prof. Guo Ruiting from the State Key Laboratory of Biocatalysis and Enzyme Engineering, School of Life Sciences, Hubei University. Professor Chen Chunqi is the first author, Associate Professor Yu Xuejing and Professor Guo Ruiting are the co corresponding authors.

Cytochrome P450 enzyme is a powerful biocatalyst and has great potential in many biotechnology applications. Most P450 enzymes require redox equivalents, which travel from pyridine nucleotides to catalytic centers via electron transport pathways, just like lightning across the sky. This review describes the current scientific understanding of P450 enzyme electron transfer pathway, especially the structure and electron transfer mechanism of two types of self-sufficient P450 enzymes with more application prospects. The first self-sufficient P450 enzyme structure was first reported by Prof. Guo Ruiting's research team in 2020 (published in Nature Communications). This paper provides an important theoretical basis for the study of P450 enzyme mechanism and the application of enzyme engineering.

At present, the paper appears in ChemBioChem as a cover article. The cover is designed with the background of the library of Hubei University. The arrangement of the three main parts of the library is similar to that of the self-sufficient P450 enzyme (represented by similar colors). A flash of lightning passes across the sky as if electrons are transferred inside the P450 enzyme (as shown in the picture). As a landmark of Hubei University, the library carries the youth and dream of countless students of HUBU. This October embraces Hubei University’ 90th anniversary. At that point, Prof. Guo Ruiting's research team published a cover article with the library as the background to celebrate the 90th birthday of his alma mater Hubei University.

Prof. Guo Ruiting's team has been engaged in the research of molecular structure of industrial enzymes. Since joining Hubei University, they have published their results in Nature Reviews Chemistry, Immunity, ACS Catalysis, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. And Nature Communications, etc. They have also received support from the National Key Research and Development Program of China and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
