Hubei University ranks 12th among universities in the world and 3rd among Chinese Universities in terms of the number of publications and their impact in the field of antibacterial materials, according to the "Biomaterials Innovations for the Future: unveiling the ten most captivating areas for advancements", a report jointly released by Westlake University and the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), a division of the American Chemical Society.

By extensively analyzing over 90,000 documents (journal articles and patents) from 2003 to 2023, the report identified publication trends, emerging materials and their forms and applications within the field. Specifically, in the area of antibacterial materials, the report ranked research institutions based on the number of journal publications and the average citations per article, with the top 15 institutions listed.  Biomedical Materials Engineering Research Center at Hubei University, the only team at Hubei University specializing in the research of antibacterial biomaterials, has been selected for the list.

Biomedical Materials Engineering Research Center at Hubei University has a longstanding focus on the development of intelligent responsive antibacterial biomaterials, and has achieved a number of innovative results in intelligent responsive material, Inorganic-polymer composite and hybrid smart biomaterials, material surface and interface engineering,  and antibacterial materials for the treatment of bacterial infectious diseases. Team members have undertaken several major research projects, including the China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars, pre-research project of National Key Basic Research Development Plan of Ministry of Science and Technology, the key research and development plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology, General Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Distinguished Young Scholars Project Fund by Hubei Province. They have published over 200 academic articles in top international journals like the "Chemical Society Review", "Nature Communications","Science Advances" and "Advanced Materials", and have been granted more than 30 national patents. Notably, Professor Liu Xiangmei from the team was recognized as a "Highly Cited Researcher" by Clarivate Analytics in 2023.
