Hubei province removes the last hurdle to accelerate development of Bio-manufacturing industry

To accelerate the industrialization of bio-manufacturing, Hubei province is promoting industry-academia-research collaborative innovation, driving the development of this emerging industry with disruptive potential.

The Bio-manufacturing industry can turn waste into valuable resources. Every 5 tons of straw can be converted into 1 ton of ethanol, which can power a medium-sized aircraft to fly about 200 kilometers. This is the latest transformation of scientific and technological achievements made by Hubei University's research team, which can convert agricultural waste into aviation fuel and industrial raw materials.

The rapid implementation of this new technology owes much to Hubei University’s innovative collaboration in organizing scientific research.

Scientific researchers explained that Hubei University has equipped its fundamental research team with high-end equipment such as cryo-electron microscopy, enabling professors to clearly observe protein microstructure. Computing infrastructure for synthetic biology is built to utilize new research tools like AI for screening proteins and enzymes. Pilot and scale-up platforms are also constructed, allowing professors to validate their research results through small-scale manufacture without leaving the campus.

From basic research to technological breakthrough and industrial incubation, Hubei University is building a full-chain innovative system of Bio-manufacturing. Over the past three years, it has successfully transformed over 200 scientific and technological achievements in Bio-manufacturing into practical applications and incubated 16 technology-driven enterprises in related fields. The accelerated progress of Bio-manufacturing at Hubei University demonstrates the efforts of Hubei province to promote the growth of Bio-manufacturing.
