During the Chinese New Year, The overseas Confucius Institute co-established by Hubei University organized a series of activities for the celebration. In order to popularize Chinese New Year culture among the local population and win their warm and enthusiastic welcome, all of the teachers and students participated in the events and shared happiness without boundaries.
On January 20th, the Chinese New Year cultural activity “Happy Chinese New Year” jointly hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Sao Tome and Principe, United Nations Development Programme Country Office in Sao Tome and Principe and Hubei University - Confucius Institute at the University of Sao Tome and Principe took place. More than 200 people were present, including Ambassador Xu Yingzhen, UN Coordinator in Sao Tome and Principe Mr. Overvest, President of the University of Sao Tome and Principe Mr. Da Costa, teachers and students of the Confucius Institute, Chinese aid experts teams, representatives of the Sao Tome and Principe Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Chinese overseas students in Sao Tome and Principe and people from all walks of life.
During the opening ceremony, its teachers and students played a Kung Fu Fan show Farewell to My Concubine and a group song Pay a New Year call. During the party, there was a lot to learn and a number of games.The locals gathered to actively participate in the cultural exhibition , tasting Chinese food, playing traditional Chinese games and experiencing unique traditions. The West African island at the “origin of the world”(0°0’0” N, 0°0’0” W) was full of the ‘breeze’ of the Chinese New Year and the atmosphere was filled with laughter.
Hubei University-Confucius Institute at São Paulo State University, Brazil celebrated the Chinese New Year both online and offline with activities including the Chinese New Year Festival micro class, New Year’s Carnival, Calligraphy, Paintings and Videos for blessings, and New Names for New Year. In the ninth Chinese New Year Festival Portugese micro class, teachers from the Confucius Institute explained the customs of the Laba Festival and Lantern Festival to local people, which had more than 10 thousand views. Moreover, some shows had been played at the Global Confucius Institute Cloud Spring Festival Gala, including teachers and students reciting Portuguese poetry such as Cancao do exilio (Song of exile), Jasmine and I Love You, China on violin, as well as a water music performance and the chorus Lonely Warrior through the online cloud platform.
On the eve of Chinese New year and the first day of the New Year, teachers and students from the Confucius Institute participated in fantastic pop-up events for the new year Eulogy to the Motherland on Paulista Street, playing Chinese Kung Fu and singing the song My people, My Country. They also read the children’s picture book stories Borrow a Tail and Light a Lantern, and taught others Chinese knot and paper folding at the local immigration museum.
On January 27th, the students of the Hubei University-Poland Jagiellon Institute Confuscius Institute organized 2023 Chinese New Year celebration activities, which attracted more than 200 people. Children and adults performed songs together and danced. There were many outstanding shows, which provided an impressive and marvelous experience for audience and made them feel like they were in China.
During the Chinese culture experience activity, visitors learned about the charm of Chinese culture through their firsthand experience of trying distinctive Chinese food, taking photos with Chinese traditional costumes and props, calligraphy, paper-cutting, tea art, string bracelet and Chinese games.
Staff of The Confucius Institute (Classroom) said that the series of activities for celebrating the Chinese New Year has spread understanding of Chinese culture widely to every corner of the world and thus narrowed the distance between Chinese people and people of other countries. In the coming years, they will continue to make efforts and hope to play an active and positive role in the promotion of Chinese language education and cultural and educational exchange programs.
