Liu Xiangmei's research team from the School of Materials Science and Engineering, published a paper entitled "Engineered Probiotics Biofilm Enhances Osseointegration via Immunoregulation and Anti-infection" on Science Advances (Impact Factor 13.12), a subjournal of Science.

The team used inactivated Lactobacillus casei biofilms to construct a functional coating on the surface of titanium implants. The lactic acid and bacteriocins in the biofilms showed excellent antibacterial properties against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in vivo and in vitro. The Lactobacillus casei biofilm was also shown to be effective in activating the immune response of macrophages through protein and gene analysis, and the secreted osteoblast factor successfully promoted osteogenic differentiation and accelerated osteointegration of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. This probiotic-modified bone implant would be an applicable biofunctional material as it would not introduce live bacteria into the bloodstream. This study suggested that probiotics may not only treat intestinal diseases, but also have potential applications in the immunotherapy of other diseases.
