Wagner Lacerda Dantas (Chinese name: Li Zhuilong), a Brazilian international student at Hubei University, published an article on People’s Daily on August 8, which is entitled “Sowing Dreams, Reaping Friendship and Opportunities”. The excerpt is as follows:

I was born in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco State in northeastern Brazil, which is undergoing profound friendship with China. When I was a child, my impression of China came from kung fu movies. At the year of 9, my father took me to watch two classic Chinese martial arts movies. In the movies, the Chinese kung fu masters were fast, agile and sharp, and their movements were clean and vigorous, which made me excited. Deeply attracted by Chinese Kung Fu, I was full of curiosity and yearning for China and its culture.

Out of my love for Chinese Kung Fu, I call myself after a household figure in China-Li Xiaolong (Bruce Lee). With the deepening of Chinese learning, I changed the name into “Li Zhuilong”implying“chasing your Chinese dream”, and expected that I can experience the development of China on person one day, to do my bit for the the friendship between China and Brazil.

The opportunity came soon. In 2015, with a deep love for Chinese history and culture, I started studying at the Confucius Institute of São Paulo State University, where rich Chinese courses and cultural activities opened the door for me to learn more about Chinese culture. On the recommendation of Confucius Institute, I was offered an internship at CCTV Latin America Central Journalist Station. In news reports, I recorded many significant moments with my camera and pen, witnessing the increasingly close cooperation between China and Brazil, and the deepening friendship between the two peoples .

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the China-Brazil diplomatic ties. Over the past 50 years, the two countries have deepened political mutual trust, and economic and trade cooperation, and promoted people-to-people and cultural exchanges. They have jointly propelled the construction of the BRICS mechanism and boosted South-South cooperation, which not only provided opportunities for ordinary Brazilians like me to study in China, but also brought together a strong synergy to safeguard world peace and development.

Whether I successfully pursue my dream in China or witness historical moments as a news reporter, Chinese has rendered my life more possibilities. This beautiful language enables me to sow my dreams and reap friendship and opportunities. Although Brazil and China are geographically far apart, they have enhanced people-to-people exchanges, and promoted mutual understanding through dialogue and communication. I wish I could be an active cultural envoy to enhance closer people-to-people ties so as to tell stories of China’s vigorous development to the world.
