On November 29, the 2025 Hubei Agriculture Expo, themed “Building a Land of Fish and Rice in the New Era,” opened at the Wuhan International Expo Center. Provincial leaders, including Wang Zhonglin, Secretary of the Hubei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and Director of the Standing Committee of the Hubei Provincial People’s Congress, jointly pressed a button to inaugurate the event. Xie Hongxing, Secretary of the CPC Hubei University Committee, attended as a representative of higher education institutions. The bio-manufacturing achievements of Professor Yang Shihui’s team from the School of Life Sciences garnered significant attention as an exemplary model of innovation in higher education.

After the opening ceremony, Wang Zhonglin and other provincial leaders visited the Hubei University exhibition area for inspection and guidance. Xie Hongxing provided a detailed report on the innovative breakthroughs made by Professor Yang Shihui’s team in efficiently producing various platform compounds using non-grain raw materials. Wang Zhonglin spoke highly of this “turning waste into treasure” technological innovation.

According to the report, Professor Yang Shihui’s team utilized synthetic biology techniques to precisely engineer industrial microbial strains, overcoming bottlenecks such as limited understanding, insufficient tools, modification difficulties, and product monotony in non-model industrial strains. This success has revolutionized traditional production methods reliant on petroleum or grain raw materials. It not only offers significant economic benefits but also promotes carbon reduction at the source, demonstrating robust capabilities in serving the national green and low-carbon development agenda.
