2025 Biomanufacturing Conference, themed as Boundless Vitality, Manufacturing the Future, was held in Chongqing on December 18. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a list of pilot-scale biomanufacturing capacity building platforms, high-performance bioreactors and landmark products in the conference. The Pilot-scale Intelligent Biomanufacturing Platform for Synthetic Biology of Hubei University was successfully selected as one of the first national-level pilot-scale biomanufacturing capacity building platforms, thanks to its outstanding capabilities in the field of biomanufacturing. It is reported that a total of 43 institutions nationwide were included in the inaugural list, with only 4 universities among them.

As a vital production method for future materials, biomanufacturing has become a key driver in advancing new industrialization and building a strong manufacturing nation. It has deeply penetrated critical sectors of the national economy, such as food, pharmaceutics, materials, chemicals and energy, with its industrial scale continuing to expand. The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council have placed high importance on the development of biomanufacturing. In recent years, Central Economic Work Conferences have made successive strategic arrangements, steadily elevating its strategic position. The 2025 Government Work Report explicitly proposed establishing a growth mechanism for investment in future industries and fostering emerging sectors such as biomanufacturing. The Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee reviewed and approved the Proposals for the 15th Five-Year Plan which emphasizes forward-looking arrangements for future industries and driving sectors like biomanufacturing to become new engines of economic growth. Pilot-scale platforms are regarded as the final mile in promoting scientific and technological achievements into industrial applications and serve as a crucial bridge connecting laboratory research with industrialization.

The university has continuously deepened its research in the field of biomanufacturing. It concentrates on two core areas: biomanufacturing chips, namely enzymes and cell factories and biomanufacturing lithography machine, namely genome editing and synthetic tools. Centered on key sectors such as enzyme preparations and biochemical engineering, the university provides full-chain pilot services from technology development to large-scale production, accelerating the industrialization process of biomanufacturing. The approval of the platform provides a pilot-scale base for four core areas, including rational enzyme design and large-scale engineering of enzymes, in-depth analysis of enzyme structure-activity relationships, high-efficiency expression and purification of enzymes, and cell factory construction and performance validation, effectively promoting the industrialization of scientific and technological achievements.

In the future, the university will further advance the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, optimize the full-chain process of core technology research and development—scaled verification and pilot integration and amplification—industrial application, and provide open services such as technical support and industrial chain optimization. The university will deepen the integration of government, industry, university, research, finance, service, and application to contribute a solid HUBU force to building a modern biomanufacturing industrial system.
